Excel Power Query: How to get a Facebook group’s Object ID

I’ve been playing with Power Query a lot lately. Few months ago, Facebook changed group URLs from a format that includes object ID, to a friendly one that includes just the name. Unfortunately Power Query requires Object ID to access Facebook group tables like feed, members and therefore it has become difficult to figure it out quickly.

Here’s a quick workaround to figure out the object ID of a group on Facebook.

1. Go to group’s main landing page.

2. In your browser, view HTML source of the page.

3. Do a text-search on keyword “group_id=”

4. Grab the number that you see next to it.

You can then use it on Excel Power Query to access Facebook group data. Enjoy!
